Arica, Chile, Day 35, Friday, March 6, 2009

We were supposed to arrive at 8 this morning, but due to the man overboard they said 1 pm.  We got in around 12:30.  Instead of leaving at 6, they moved it to 7:30 pm.  We left closer to 8.  I haven’t kept track of how many times we sailed on time, but there haven’t been many.  We slept in this morning and ended up meeting Dennis and Becky in the Lido.  We had lunch together and got ready to go ashore.

We had to take a shuttle bus through the port to town.

There were some booths set up but we didn’t stop to look.  We got directions for an Internet spot and headed for that.  There were quite a few and we ended up in a real estate office.  The computers were full, but since I had my laptop they made room for me at a desk in their office. (It was one room).  It cost 400 pesos for an hour–about 67 cents.  We then continued down this narrow street to 21 de Mayo.  It was a pedestrian street with shops along it.  We stopped for ice cream and continued up the hill to where there were 3 drug stores.

Everyone from the ship is still buying stuff for colds.  We got some aspirin, Halls, and some honey drops.  We then headed back down the hill and saw Tweety and Sylvester, a McDonalds and booths set up.   There were many locals out an about.

Looked around and headed back to the stalls by the port.  On the way we passed the public bathrooms.

Bought a few things and headed for the ship.  Filet Mignon was on the menu tonight.  The entertainment was violinist Hanna Starosta.

She was very good.  Hanna Starosta

When we returned to the cabin there was a letter from the captain about the missing man.  It said the wife found a note that suggested a planned suicide.  They are also looking for a lost piece of luggage missing for 4 days.  The captain is retiring and we think this is his last cruise.  I’ll bet it is one he won’t forget!
