Day 37 – Friday, February 11, 2011 – Lyttelton & Christchurch, NZ

Lyttelton, NZ

We didn’t have a tour today so we went to Wii but the machine wasn’t working so we got $3 Grand Dollars instead!  We then took the shuttle from Lyttelton to Christchurch which was about a 30 minute ride.  We had to ride through a tunnel to reach Christchurch.  The shuttle dropped us off at Cathedral Square.  We wanted to find the Harley-Davidson store and I couldn’t find the address in the cabin so the lady in the visitor center looked it up in the phone book for us.  We knew it was on Manchester St., but that was it.  It was number 35, but she didn’t know which end of the street it would be on.  She gave us directions ( which turned out to be the long way ) and we set off.  Once we got on Manchester, we noticed so much construction and then was told it was from the earthquake they had in September.  Many stores were still closed or had moved elsewhere.  We headed south and figured we walked about half a mile.  We were then wondering if the store would even be open.  It was.  On the way back we passed a golf store with a “Boxing Day Sale redone” sign.  There had been a big aftershock on Boxing Day.

We walked back up Colombo St to Cathedral Square.  We had some fish and chips from a stand and watched the goings on.  Ray took a rest and there was a big metal sculpture in the square.

There was a guy on a ladder saying what was wrong with the world – women shopping!  A guy was holding a sign saying “Free Hug”, a gal singing, vendors, and lots of topiaries.

The bus driver took a sharp turn on the way home and a guy in a wheelchair tipped backwards, landing in front of Ray.  Luckily the guy went down in slow-motion and Ray was able to pull his leg out of the way and try to catch the guy.  His leg could have been broken.  The guy was fine, but his wife hurt her side trying to catch him.  They are from Germany and he has MS.  We saw this sign on a building on the shuttle back to the ship.  “We sale the best chips in town” and “Eastgate Fish & chips & Burgers Chinese takeaway”.

We  had NZ cherries for dessert. IMG_2574

The entertainment tonight was Soul Mystique, a dance and quick-change couple.  It is amazing to watch the changes take place before your eyes.  We sat up front for this one!
