Day 47–Mon., Feb. 21, 2011–Sydney, Australia

There was a little bit of rain and drizzle this morning.  We didn’t go to Wii this morning as we wanted to go to the Post Office.  They gave us a book on Sydney with a map, so I followed that.  The PO we were looking for had closed so we asked directions and found another one nearby.  We then did a little shopping and walked back to the ship. IMG_3429 It IMG_3430would have been neat to take a ride on this boat.  Check out the engines.

We walked to the aft of our ship and saw the Duyfken, a replica of the ship that discovered Australia. Duyfken The Duyfken, which means Little Dove, was built in the Netherlands at the end of the 16th Century.  The ship was devastated by Teredo Worm in 1608.  It was rebuilt in 1995.  It escorted us on our sail away from Sydney.  The Meeting of these two ships represent over 400 years of Dutch maritime history.

IMG_3451Stein Kruse, the President and CEO of Holland America is onboard for a couple of days and there was a huge Sail Away Party on the aft Lido deck.  Ray had his picture taken with Stein Kruse during the party.  We had snacks and free drinks.

Sydney Opera HouseWe had our last look at Sydney as we left port.  The little dots you see on top of the bridge are people walking up the bridge.

Sail away was fun, as we had a fireboat leading the way with the Duyfken.   We sailed through the gap and we were on our way to Cairns.

Our entertainment tonight was Paul Martell, a singer/comedian who also did impersonations.
