Day 20, Thurs., Jan. 24, 2013–Cruising Pitcairn Island, South Pacific Ocean

Pitcairn Island

We were told yesterday that of the 57 island population, over 20 or 35% had contracted the H2N3 flu virus, believed brought to the island on a passing cruise ship a couple of weeks ago.  Therefor, they will not allow any of the residents to come aboard the ship.  Instead, we stopped so that some supplies could get onto one of their longboats.  It would sort of compensate them for not being able to sell us anything.  They put some of our lifeboats back in their correct place while we were stopped.  We sailed around the beautiful island and then set course for Papeete.

These 3 pictures were taken from our TV.  The first one shows our position in relation to Papeete, the second one is a close-up, showing us circling Pitcairn and I really love the third one .  If you look closely, you will see our position circled in the middle of nowhere.IMG_1837

We were also told about a typhoon, but the closest we would be to it would be 600 miles.  However, Papeete has had a couple of weeks of rain and we might have rain when we arrive on Sunday.  We are not sure if many places will be open anyway.  I’m hoping the market will be so we can get some flowers for the cabin.

Tonight was a formal night with the theme of Mutiny on the Bounty.  There was lobster tail and filet mignon on the menu.  Our clocks were set back an hour tonight.  There was no “gift” tonight.IMG_1838  IMG_1840
