Day 89, Thurs., April 4, 2013 – Safari then Durban, South Africa

We didn’t have a good night’s sleep and Tim banged on our door at 5:30 am and picked us up at 6 am.  We started out on another adventure, this time in clear weather.   Tim thought he saw a hyena in the road, but as it ran into the grass he realized it was a leopard!  His tail was pretty, but again, no photo.  Then there was something else in the road – a rhinoceros!  It was stretched out and sleeping.  Tim said they like the smooth road.  We say a hyena track, but no hyena.  The grass is very tall and it is easy for them to hide.  We  went up to a lookout area and took a chance and got out of the van for a photo.  The area is so beautiful and peaceful.  We drove many of the dirt roads.  Then we found some more giraffes and saw a termite mound.

We headed in for a buffet breakfast around 8:30 or so and then visited the gift shop.  We checked out of our rooms and then went to finish packing and head out for another drive.  Tim was on a hunt for some zebras.  He said if we find giraffes, we should find zebras.  We also wanted elephants!  We found lots more water buffaloes, nyala, water buck, some baboons and then Rich spotted zebras.  We then found the elephants, so we found the big five!  We were very happy campers!  Thank You, Tim Brown Tours!

It was about a three hour drive back to the ship in Durban.  We stopped at Wimpy’s for a quick lunch.  Bonnie and Rich were meeting friends in Durban and Ray and I went to dinner.

Well, that was what I remembered from our tour.  Below is Tim’s posting that he put on his Web Site.   Please see the below blog post of Tour:

Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve :

In case the link doesn’t work, here is his report.

“Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve and DumaZulu Cultural village 3-4 April 2013

I collected my Clients off the Amsterdam ship in Richards Bay. Susan had booked this tour from more than a year in advance and would you believe it there was a little rain, This didn’t hamper our spirits as my clients had been looking for things to do in Durban area and I had arranged a Zulu Cultural experience and a 2 night Tour into Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve. (Africa’s oldest game reserve)

At DumaZulu we had a good performance from the family who live and run the cultural experience. After all the song and dance and learning more of Zulu Culture we headed to Hluhluwe (memorial gate). We were insanely lucky!

Within 10 minutes I spotted in my wing mirror a Lioness crossing the road behind me! There were jokes saying I would make a good school teacher as I have eyes at the back of my head! lol.

This was great, we couldn’t do wrong and we found giraffe, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant all on day one. The following day could not have been any better I found a female leopard on crossing the road into the long grass. This was so special.

Later Zebra, Elephant and Buffalo as well as giraffe etc.

It was the Big 5 in less than 24 hours and a trip for the clients to remember.

There was a movie tonight, “Out of Africa”, but we did not go.
