Day 97, Fri., April 12, 2013 — Walvis Bay, Namibia

We decided to take the complimentary shuttle service to the Walvis Bay Town Centre today.  It was under a 15 minute ride.  Just outside the gate there were the usual vendors lined up along the wall.  Our mission today was to try to find an optometrist to get another nose pad for my new glasses.  The druggist gave us directions to Optiker Roehloff, we got buzzed in and he fixed my glasses for free.  He said nine dollars and I told him I had Rand, but he told me not to worry about it.  We had to get buzzed out and now I can switch back to my new glasses.  That was very nice of him.  We have not met anyone unfriendly on this cruise.  I would hope folks in the US would show the same kindness to foreign tourists.  We looked in a few shops and ended up in the grocery store.  Check out the chips we saw – but didn’t buy.  Hot dog or fruit chutney flavored!

After lunch on the ship there was a performance of the BNC Youth Choir.

This is the center that we raised funds through the silent auction of water colors ($1,730) and the dunking of staff for around $1,270 and Bruce put in $3,000 from his budget.  The kids also were fed chicken nuggets and fries and received an HAL backpack filled with goodies.  They did a good job in spite of the fact that there was a power failure in the middle of their performance.

There were a couple of cut little girls in the front that were having the time of their life.  I have a video of the performance if you would like to see it.

After dinner the entertainment was concert pianist Naomi Edemariam.  It was amazing to watch her fingers fly on the keyboard.
